Ever wondered why a piano is called a “piano”? Or why the violin looks the way it does? This course aims to answer why musical instruments have evolved over the centuries. Through audio and visuals examples, as well as some live demonstrations, this two-session course will discuss the origins of two popular musical instruments, as well as what changed to make what we see today. This semester we will focus on the violin and piano. Prior knowledge of the subject matter is helpful, but not required – audio/visual examples will be shown in the class of the instruments being discussed. No course materials required – there will be a Power Point presentation and handouts will be provided during each session. The goal of this course is for you, the student, to gain a better understanding and appreciation of how musical instruments evolve over the centuries.
*This Class has the potential to go online, due to COVID-19. We will reach out to registered students if this is necessary.
